When second graders read The Sock Thief, by Ana Crespo and illustrated by Nana Gonzalez, many of my students wanted to make a "sock"er ball. They wanted to try making a ball with socks and newspaper. You may find some great instructions at Ana Crespo's website. In the story and the author's note, we found out that many children have made soccer balls this way - even the King of Soccer, Pelé. We read a biography about Pelé written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Rudy Gurierrez, since many of the students didn't know about this amazing soccer star. Here are a few pictures that show what a great time we had making our own soccer balls. When one of our pre-k classes saw our bin of soccer balls, they just had to try them out too. They played with the balls and read the book too. And yes, if you are wondering, we did play soccer in the library. It was great fun. |
