This year our K-5 students participated in Mock Awards. Grades K, 1, 3, and 5 evaluated picture books for the Caldecott Award. Grades 2 and 4 evaluated picture books for the Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator Awards.

To do this, we learned about the awards and how books qualify. We learned about some of the books that had earned the awards in the past.

We also read many excellent picture books before voting on our favorites. Sometimes students loved the books so much, they would draw pictures of them like this one of The Bear Ate Your Sandwich.

Dear Mrs. Brunelle 2nd graders, and all students at Northern Hills-

I am extremely honored to hear you selected The Sock Thief as the winner for the Mock Pura Belpré – author category. THANK YOU!

The Sock Thief was my very first book to be published in English and, as you know, it was based on my dad's childhood, so it is a very a particularly special book to me. It is wonderful to see it recognized by young readers, like you.

Thank you again! And keep reading!

Ana

PS: Ms. Brunelle, if it is okay with the school, I’d love to send you two signed copies of The Sock Thief – one for your library and one to be given away to one of your second graders. Please, contact me through the e-mail attached to this post (or via my webpage – www.anacrespobooks.com) so we can “talk” about it. Thank you!
