Fourth and fifth grade classes were able to read A Fine Dessert in the past few weeks. It is an amazing book that shares how families have been making this fine dessert for many years. It's fascinating to see how the process has stayed the same and how it has changed.

Our fifth grade students have a few things to share about summer reading:
Why read over summer break? If you don’t read during the summer, you will be three months behind your classmates that read over summer. We also read during the summer for the fun of it. Make summer reading plans - Some books we plan to read are: Bomb, A book about the atomic bomb Diary of a Wimpy kid: The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce The Lost Hero series by Rick Riordan Poke'mon diamond and pearl series Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech The heros of olympus series by Rick Riordan Lego & Halo books V.V. wants to read "I am Malala because I want to learn how she helped women's rights." S.M. says, "One book I want to read over the summer is How to Catch a Bogle because it looked really interesting and in school my class, Mr Lichty's class, got to watch the book trailer to it and the book was scary at first but then it looked very good and then boom it was over. I would recommend you reading this book." Where can you get books in the summer you ask? If you can’t find books you could clean your room to try and find some. If you still don’t have any, you go to a friends house and ask them for a book. You could go to a bookstore. You could also go to a public library to check out some books. Another place is your school's Little Free Library. If you want to explore, you can also go to the Little Free Library (LFL) website and find other LFL locations to visit. Where can you talk about books and get ideas about what to read? Friends and family Online (here on this blog) Bookclubs Share reading photos! You can take pictures wherever you want, as long as you’re reading! Here are some suggestions!
Every week kidlit bloggers write about nonfiction picture books on the Kid Lit Frenzy blog. Do you have any favorites that you want to share? Please see the comments below from some 4th and 5th grade students. They shared many great titles.
Do you think we need diversity in the books we read?
Matt de la Peña grew up without reading diverse books. In college he found diverse books and it changed how he felt about reading. Now, he writes books with diverse characters and he wants children and young adults to be able to find themselves in books. Several classes have been reading Yuko-Chan and the Daruma Doll by Sunny Seki. Last summer when our exchange student came, she brought us each a daruma doll. The story is bilingual and tells of these dolls that are from Japan. Daruma dolls are often bought at the beginning of the year for good luck. Our exchange student recently went to Takasaki, the city where the story takes place, and she sent some pictures from her visit.
We have the privilege of using technology here in our school district. 4th and 5th graders, please use the padlet to share ways that we can use technology respectfully, ethically, responsibly and legally when we are at school. We have read several picture books this year. What do you think makes picture books so great? What is it about them that keeps people reading them? Please share what you like about picture books or share the title of an especially good picture book that everyone should read. Thanks!
I'm so glad the new school year has started. We have so many cool things to explore and learn. We also have a lot of new books!
I am planning to continue to read lots of books this year. I am also going to try to keep this quote in mind: Begin, be bold, and venture to be wise. ~ Horace I found that quote in the new book 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts by R.J. Palacio, the author of Wonder. What are your plans or goals for the year? Mrs. Brunelle We saw a lot of book trailers this week on Mrs. Brunelle's page and on her Pinterest book trailer page too. |
